Personal Telco Project
Personal Telco is a volunteer-based non-profit that promotes and builds free wireless networks and hotspots in the Portland (Oregon) metropolitan area.
I accidentally instigated the project in November 2000 with an email to the Portland Linux Users Group. The enthusiastic response to that email led to me providing leadership and technical vision for a large group of volunteers over the next three years.
My time there was the most rewarding, most inspiring, and most frustrating period of my life. I learned an incredible amount and encountered a ridiculous amount of kindness. It brings me enormous pleasure that 20 years after I moved home to New Zealand, Personal Telco is still running.
